307th MEETING OF THE MORRIS RING

14 TO 16 JULY 2006

Greensleeves Home Page

Since 1961, Greensleeves have entertained other Morris sides in the village of Chipperfield, near Watford in Hertfordshire.  In 2006 (as in 1976, 1984 and 2001) the weekend will be a meeting of the Morris Ring.  The guests this year will include Anker Morris Men, Faithful City Morris Men, Green Man's Morris and Sword Club, Monkseaton Morrismen and Trigg Morris Men.  This year’s weekend will run from Friday 14th July to Sunday 16th July.

At 9:00 pm on Friday Greensleeves will perform a short show which traditionally starts with the Rose, a dance from the village of Fieldtown in Oxfordshire, danced around the oak tree planted in memory of Leslie Nichols, past Squire of Greensleeves and past Squire of the Morris Ring, who lived in the village and inaugurated the Chipperfield weekend.  All will then retire for singing and playing in local pubs.

The tours on Saturday 15th July will be:

At 10:30 on Sunday 16th July there will be a short procession to the open air church service (held in the Church if wet).  This will be followed at around 11:10 by a massed show including performances by all sides present.

Additional information mainly of interest to Morris Men

The weekend will be based around the Village Hall where all meals apart from lunch will be taken.  Outdoor camping in the adjacent school field is usually the most popular accommodation though some indoor camping will be available.  Showers will be available in the nearby football club.

A hot supper will be served in the Village Hall from 7:30 pm on the Friday evening and latecomers will be fed until the early hours of the morning.

Details of the Saturday tours are shown above.

At 5:00 pm the tours will return to Chipperfield and, by a miracle of logistics, sides will be swapped between tours for an early evening spot at one of the local pubs.  After this there will be time for rest and recuperation – watching the cricket is often popular – before a pre-feast sherry reception at 7:15 pm followed by the feast at 7:45 pm.

On Sunday morning there will be a short procession to the open air church service (held in the Church if wet).  This will be followed by a massed show.

Just before noon all sides will process through the village for a final show at the Windmill pub.  The weekend will conclude with a buffet lunch in the pub garden.
